The Connecticut Country House, from early beginnings as a British colony Connecticut has been known as bucolic haven. Explore 300 years of architectural heritage as we explore the country house in Connecticut. 

SPEAKERS

Wetmore House presented by Philippe Halbert Phd

Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Wadsworth Atheneum

Dr. Halbert will be discussing the Wetmore House in Middletown, CT as an example of the emergence of early country houses in the Connecticut River Valley.

Lockwood-Mathews Mansion presented by Susan Gilgore Phd

Executive Director of Lockwood-Mathews Mansion

Dr. Gilgore will present one of the first Gilded Age mansion in country, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion. Built by railroad baron Legrand Lockwood in the 1860s, the mansion is a touchpoint at which American residential architecture approaches a new scale of grandeur.

Hill-Stead presented by Melanie Bourbeau

Senior Curator of Hill-Stead

Ms. Bourbeau will present Hill-Stead and Theodate Pope-Riddle, one of the first licensed female architects in the nation and the country home in Connecticut which she created.

The Webb Deane Stevens Museum presented by Brenton Grom

Executive Director of the Webb Deane Stevens Museum

Mr. Grom will present the Webb Deane Stevens museums through the lens of Wallace Nutting and the Colonial Revivalists.

Host Site

Our host site is the Webb Deane Stevens Museum, located in the heart of Wethersfield, CT, the largest historic district in the State of Connecticut.  The Webb Deane Stevens Museum is formed by a collection of 18th century houses that were preserved in the early 20th century by noted Colonial Revivalist the Rev. Wallace Nutting. The collection of houses and surrounding acreage were acquired by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America who have effectively administered the museum and its mission to promote the understanding of early American life in the Connecticut River Valley and Wethersfields role in the founding of the Nation.
